About About This Resource

The festive season is such a magical time in primary schools and at home. Between the rehearsals for the Nativity play and making paper chains, it can sometimes be a challenge to keep children focused on their schoolwork. That is why we created our Christmas Word Search. It is a simple, fun way to bring a bit of holiday cheer into your literacy lessons without losing track of learning goals.

What is this Christmas Word Search?

This resource is a classic puzzle designed with young learners in mind. It features a clear grid of letters where children need to find and circle various holiday-themed words. We have chosen words that are familiar and easy to recognise, such as "Star," "Bell," and "Santa."

The layout is clean and easy to read, which is very important for children who are just starting to build their confidence with reading. It is a fantastic "grab-and-go" resource that requires no preparation. You just need to print it out, grab some pencils, and you are ready to go.

Who is this worksheet for?

We have designed this specifically for children in KS1 Activities, which generally includes children aged 5 to 7. At this age, children are becoming more aware of how words are formed and are starting to enjoy the challenge of puzzles.

However, older children in late EYFS who are confident with their phonics might also enjoy giving it a try. It is also a great task for any child who needs a bit of a quiet break during a busy December day. Whether you are a teacher looking for a festive filler or a parent wanting a screen-free activity at home, this Christmas Word Search is a perfect fit.

What will children learn or practise?

While it looks like just a bit of fun, this activity actually helps children practise several important skills. First, it is brilliant for word recognition. As they scan the grid, children are training their eyes to look for specific letter shapes and sequences. This is a big part of learning to read fluently.

It also helps with spelling. By looking at the word list and then searching for those exact letters in order, children reinforce their memory of how these common words are built. It also helps with focus and patience. Finding a word hidden among a sea of letters takes a bit of concentration, which is a great skill to build in the early years.

Tips for using this in class or at home

There are lots of ways to make the most of this worksheet. In a classroom setting, it works perfectly as a "morning starter" to help children settle down when they first arrive. You could also have a pile of them ready for "fast finishers" who complete their main tasks early.

At home, this is a lovely way to keep children occupied while you are busy with Christmas preparations. If you want to make it even more exciting, you could use a highlighter or a colourful felt-tip pen to circle the words.

Another great tip is to laminate the sheet. This means children can use a dry-wipe marker to find the words, rub them out, and then do it all over again. You could even turn it into a little game by seeing who can find three words the fastest!
