Make Maths Fun This Halloween

As the leaves turn orange and the nights get a bit longer, we know that children start getting very excited about Halloween. It is a wonderful time of year, but it can sometimes be a bit tricky to keep little ones focused on their schoolwork when they have pumpkins and costumes on their minds.

That is why we created these Counting Spiders worksheets. We wanted to make sure that children could enjoy the spooky season while still getting plenty of practice with their numbers. These activities are designed specifically for children in Key Stage 1, which usually means those aged between 5 and 7 years old.

What Are the Counting Spiders Worksheets?

These worksheets are a collection of simple, fun, and engaging maths activities. Instead of just looking at plain numbers on a page, children get to interact with friendly, hand-drawn spiders.

Each page features different groups of spiders. Some might be sitting on their webs, while others might be hanging out in jars. The goal is for the child to count the spiders and then record the answer. It is a very visual way to learn, which is often much more helpful for younger children than just looking at abstract numbers.

The activities are clear and uncluttered. We know that too much going on a single page can be overwhelming for 5 and 6-year-olds, so we have kept the design nice and simple.

What Will Your Child Learn?

When children use these sheets, they are doing much more than just playing with pictures. They are building a strong foundation for their future maths lessons.

First and foremost, they will practise basic counting. This helps them understand that a number represents a specific quantity of things. In the UK National Curriculum, this is a big part of "Number and Place Value" for Year 1 and Year 2.

Secondly, the worksheets help with number formation. There are spaces for children to write down the digits they have counted. This is great for their fine motor skills and helps them remember how to write numbers like 3, 5, and 8 correctly—which we know can be a bit tricky at first!

Finally, using these sheets helps children grow in confidence. Because the theme is fun and the tasks are easy to understand, they feel a sense of achievement when they finish a page.

Tips for Using These at Home or in School

You can simply print these out and hand them over with a pencil, but if you want to make it even more exciting, here are a couple of ideas:

  1. Use Spooky Counters: To make the activity more "hands-on," you could give your child some small items to place on top of the spiders as they count them. Black pom-poms work perfectly as "pretend" spiders! Or, if you want a tasty treat, you could use raisins or chocolate buttons. This helps children who learn best by touching and moving things.

  2. Laminate for Repeat Use: If you are a teacher or a parent who wants to save paper, try laminating the sheets. Children can then use a dry-wipe marker to do their Counting Spiders tasks. They can rub out their answers and try again, or pass the sheet to a friend. It’s a great way to make the resource last throughout the whole of October.

We really hope these worksheets help your children feel like maths superstars this Halloween!
