About This Resource
If you are looking for a simple and fun way to help your child start their reading journey, you are in the right place. At Study Pillars, we know that the first steps into phonics can feel a bit daunting for both children and grown-ups. That is why we created our CVC Mixed Words Matching Activity for Kids.
What is a CVC matching activity?
First of all, let’s talk about what "CVC" actually means. It stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. These are simple, three-letter words like "cat", "dog", "pin", and "sun". They are usually the very first words children learn to read because they are easy to sound out.
This CVC matching activity is a bright and colourful printable resource. It features a variety of different CVC words alongside clear illustrations. The goal is for your child to look at the picture and find the word that matches it, or vice versa. It is a hands-on way to move away from just looking at a screen or a book.

Who is this for?
This resource is perfect for children aged 3 to 6. This includes little ones in EYFS Activities who are just starting to recognise letter sounds, as well as children in Year 1 who are building up their reading speed.
It is designed to be clear and easy to follow. We have used a simple font so that children don’t get confused by fancy lettering. Whether you are a parent helping at the kitchen table or a teacher looking for a quick classroom "filler", this activity fits right in.
What will children learn?
Using this CVC matching activity helps children practise several important skills at once.
- Blending: This is when a child says the individual sounds—like c-a-t—and then pushes them together to say the whole word.
- Vocabulary: By matching pictures to words, children confirm they understand what the word actually means.
- Confidence: Because these words are short, children can often solve them quickly. This gives them a lovely boost of "I can do it!" energy.
In the UK National Curriculum, these skills are the building blocks for the Phonics Screening Check that children take in Year 1. Practising with these cards makes that process feel much more like a game and much less like a test.
Tips for using this at home or in class
You can use these cards in plenty of different ways. Here are two of our favourites:
- The Memory Game: Lay all the picture cards and word cards face down on the table. Take turns flipping two over. If the word matches the picture, you keep the pair! This adds an extra layer of focus and memory work to the KS1 Literacy Resources you are already using.
- A Scavenger Hunt: Hide the word cards around the room. Give your child the picture cards and tell them they have to find the "hidden" names for each image. Getting children moving while they learn is a great way to keep them engaged.
If you want the cards to last longer, we recommend laminating them. That way, you can wipe them clean and use them again and again.
We hope you and your little learners have a brilliant time matching these words and pictures together. You are doing a great job helping them grow!
