About This Resource
Help your child start reading with CVC words
If you are looking for a simple and fun way to help your child begin their reading adventure, you are in the right place.
Learning to read is a huge milestone for any child. It often starts with getting to know individual letter sounds. Once a child knows a few sounds, the next big step is putting them together to make short words. This is where our CVC sound activities come in.
What is a CVC word?
CVC stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. These are simple three-letter words that have a short vowel sound in the middle. Think of words like 'cat', 'dog', 'sun', 'pig', and 'hen'.
Because these words are short and follow a simple pattern, they are usually the very first words children learn to read and write. They are the building blocks of literacy. Once a child feels confident with these, they can start to tackle longer, more complex words.

Who is this resource for?
This resource is designed for young learners aged between 3 and 6. It is perfect for children in Early Years Learning who are just starting to explore phonics. It is also a great tool for children in Year 1 who need a little extra practice to build their confidence.
Whether you are a parent helping your child at the kitchen table or a teacher looking for a quick morning task, these activities are easy to pick up and use straight away.
What will children learn?
Our pack of CVC sound activities focuses on three main skills:
- Blending: This is when a child says the sounds 'c-a-t' and pushes them together to say 'cat'.
- Segmenting: This is the opposite of blending. It involves hearing a word like 'dog' and breaking it down into its individual sounds: 'd-o-g'. This is a vital skill for spelling.
- Letter Recognition: By seeing the letters alongside pictures, children get better at recognising the shape of each letter and remembering the sound it makes.
By using these sheets, children will feel like they are playing a game rather than doing "work." This keeps them engaged and happy while they learn.
How to use this resource at home or in class
You can use these activities in many different ways. Here are two simple tips to get you started:
- Use Magnetic Letters: Instead of just using a pencil, ask your child to build the words on the page using magnetic fridge letters. This makes the activity more "hands-on" and is great for children who find it hard to sit still.
- Sound Scavenger Hunt: Pick a CVC word from the pack, like 'cup'. Ask your child to find that object in the house or classroom after they have completed the activity page.
Fitting in with the UK National Curriculum
These activities follow the same methods used in most UK primary schools. They align with the Phonics Resources used in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Year 1 curriculum. Using these at home is a brilliant way to support what your child is already doing in the classroom. You can find more helpful tasks in our Key Stage 1 Activities section.
Reading should be a happy time for you and your child, so remember to keep it light and celebrate every little win.
You are doing a great job supporting your child's learning!
