About This Resource
Helping your child with early reading and writing
Helping your child take their first steps into reading and writing is such an exciting time. If your little one is starting to sound out small words, our "CVC Writing Activities & Cut and Stick Letters" pack is here to help.
CVC stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. These are simple three-letter words like 'cat', 'dog', 'pin', or 'sun'. They are usually the very first words children learn to read and write because each letter makes its most common sound. They are the building blocks for everything that comes next.
What is this resource?
This resource is all about making phonics hands-on and engaging. We know that sitting still and writing for a long time can be tricky for young children. That is why we combined writing with a "cut and stick" element.
The pack includes clear, bright worksheets where children can look at a picture, find the right letters, and stick them in the correct order. These CVC writing activities help children see how letters join together to make a whole word. Once they have built the word with the paper letters, there is a space for them to pick up a pencil and try writing it themselves.

Who is it for?
We designed this pack specifically for children in the EYFS (Reception) and early Year 1. It is perfect for children who are just starting to learn their letter sounds. It fits naturally with the UK National Curriculum, which encourages children to use their phonics knowledge to spell words correctly.
Whether you are a teacher looking for a quiet morning activity or a parent wanting to support learning at home, these sheets are very easy to use. You won't need any complicated instructions—just some scissors, a glue stick, and a pencil.
What will children learn?
By using these sheets, children get to practice several important skills at the same time:
- Phonics: They will practice "segmenting" a word. This means breaking the word 'tap' down into 't-a-p'.
- Fine motor skills: Using scissors to cut out the letter squares is great for building hand strength. This actually helps them become better at holding a pencil later on.
- Letter formation: Our CVC writing activities provide a clear guide for children to copy, helping them get their letters the right way round.
- Confidence: Completing a whole page on their own gives children a real sense of achievement.
Tips for using this at home
To make the most of this resource, try these simple ideas:
- Say it out loud: Before your child starts cutting, look at the picture together. Ask them to say the word slowly. Can they hear the sound at the beginning? What about the sound at the end?
- Make it a game: If your child is finding the writing part a bit tiring, let them do the "cut and stick" part first. You could even hide the letter squares around the room to make it a treasure hunt!
If you find your child enjoys these tasks, you might want to explore our other KS1 English Resources for more ideas. We also have plenty of Phonics Activities to help them keep progressing.
Using these sheets for just ten minutes a day can make a massive difference to your child's confidence.
We hope you and your little ones have a brilliant time building words together!
