About This Resource
If you are looking for simple, fun ways to help your child with their first steps into reading and writing, you are in the right place.
Our "Say It, Join It, Write It" pack is designed to make learning feel like a bit of a game. It is a brilliant addition to your collection of children writing activities. This resource takes a three-step approach to help children understand how sounds turn into words. It’s practical, easy to follow, and very effective.
What is "Say It, Join It, Write It"?
This resource is a set of activities that break down the process of spelling. Instead of just looking at a word and trying to copy it, children use three different senses to learn.
First, they Say It. This helps them hear the individual sounds (phonics) in a word. Next, they Join It. This might involve drawing a line from a picture to the correct letters or moving letter tiles together. Finally, they Write It. This is where they pick up a pencil and practise their handwriting.
This method is perfect for children in Reception and Year 1. It is also a great help for older children who might need a bit of extra confidence with their spelling.

What will your child learn?
When children use these sheets, they aren't just memorising words. They are learning how words are built. Here are a few things they will practise:
- Phonics: Recognising the sounds that letters make.
- Blending: Putting those sounds together to read a whole word.
- Handwriting: Developing the muscle memory needed to write clearly.
- Confidence: Because the tasks are broken into small steps, children feel like they are winning at every stage.

How to use this at home
You don’t need to be a teacher to use these activities. They are designed to be used at the kitchen table or on the floor during a quiet moment.
One tip is to start small. Choose just three or four words a day. If your child gets stuck on the "Write It" part, don't worry. You can let them write the word in a tray of sand or flour first. This makes it feel less like "work" and more like play.
In the classroom, teachers often use these as "morning starters" or as part of a small group session. They are one of those children writing activities that work well because they don’t take a long time to set up, but they keep little hands and minds very busy.
Fitting in with school work
In the UK, the National Curriculum focuses heavily on phonics in the early years. Our "Say It, Join It, Write It" resource fits right in with what they are doing in the classroom. It helps bridge the gap between the sounds they learn in school and the physical act of writing them down.

We hope you and your little ones have a lot of fun with these activities! You are doing a great job supporting their learning.
