These worksheets are simple, colourful, and very easy to use. Whether you are a parent at home or a teacher in a busy classroom, these match the shapes activities provide a great way to introduce 2D shapes. We have included all the classics, like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles, as well as some more interesting ones like hexagons and stars.
Who Is This Resource For?
This resource is perfect for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage. It is also a handy tool for children starting Year 1 who might need a bit of extra practice or a quick refresher.
We know that every child learns at their own pace. Some children will zip through these pages, while others might want to take their time talking about each shape. That is why we have made these activities stress-free and straightforward. There are no complicated instructions—just clear pictures and plenty of space to work.

What Will Children Learn?
By using these match the shapes activities, children build several important skills at once. First, they learn visual discrimination. This is a vital skill where they learn to spot the differences and similarities between objects. This helps them later on when they start to tell the difference between letters like 'b' and 'd'.
Children will also practise their fine motor skills. As they draw lines to connect the matching pairs, they are working on their pencil control. This is a big part of the UK National Curriculum for early years and Key Stage 1. They will also learn to:
- Recognise and name common 2D shapes.
- Spot shapes regardless of their size or colour.
- Understand that a shape stays the same even if it is turned upside down.

Top Tips for Using This Resource
You can simply print these sheets out and let your child go for it with a pencil or a bright crayon. However, if you want to make the most of them, here are a couple of ideas:
1. Make it Reusable If you have a laminator, try laminating the sheets. This way, kids can use a dry-wipe marker to do the matching over and over again. It is a great way to build confidence, as they can easily rub out any mistakes and try again.
2. The Shape Hunt After they finish a worksheet, turn it into a game! Ask your child to find an object in the room that matches one of the shapes on the page. Can they find a square cushion or a circular clock? This helps them see that maths is everywhere, not just on a piece of paper.
Helping Your Child Grow
Learning about shapes is one of the first big steps in a child's education. It sets the stage for everything from geometry to art. By using these simple learning worksheets, you are helping them build a strong foundation for the future.
We hope you and your little ones have a lot of fun exploring these shapes together! You are doing a brilliant job supporting their learning at home or in school.
