About This Resource
Are you looking for a fun, hands-on way to help your children learn about the tiny creatures living in your garden or local park? Our Mini Beast Identify Cut and Stick Worksheets are a fantastic way to get kids excited about nature while they practice some very important skills.
What is this resource?
This activity is all about sorting and identifying different types of "mini beasts." If you haven't heard the term before, it is just a friendly name for all those small invertebrates like spiders, beetles, snails, and butterflies.
In this pack, you will find several mini beast worksheets designed to be interactive. Instead of just looking at a page, children get to pick up their scissors and glue. They will see a variety of different creatures and will need to cut them out carefully. Then, they have to decide which category each bug belongs to before sticking them down in the right place.

Who is it for?
We have designed these mini beast worksheets specifically for children in Key Stage 1 (KS1). This usually means children in Year 1 and Year 2, aged between 5 and 7. However, if you have a little one who is particularly interested in bugs, you might find these work well for older children in our EYFS Activities section too.
It is a great resource for teachers to use in the classroom during a Science lesson. It also works perfectly for parents at home who want a quiet, educational activity for a rainy afternoon.
What will children learn?
There is so much more to this activity than just sticking paper! By using these worksheets, children will:
- Learn to identify creatures: They will start to spot the differences between an insect with six legs and a spider with eight.
- Practice sorting: Categorising things is a big part of early Science and Maths. It helps children look for patterns and common features.
- Improve fine motor skills: Using scissors to cut around small shapes is a brilliant workout for the little muscles in their hands. This actually helps them with their handwriting later on!
- Follow instructions: Children need to listen to or read the categories to make sure they are putting the bugs in the right spots.
This activity fits naturally with the UK National Curriculum for Science, where children learn to identify and name a variety of common animals. You can find more helpful items like this in our KS1 Resources area.
Practical tips for home or school
If you want to make the most of this resource, why not try a "mini beast hunt" first? You could go out into the garden or a nearby park and see how many real creatures you can find under logs or on leaves.
When you come back inside, the children will feel like real experts as they complete their worksheets! If you want to add a bit of extra fun, you could ask the children to colour in the creatures before they cut them out. It’s a great way to talk about the bright colours of a ladybird or the stripes on a bee.
If your child enjoys the sorting side of things, they might also like some of our Year 1 Science Activities which cover other types of animals and plants.
We hope you and your little explorers have a wonderful time discovering all the amazing bugs in our world!

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need any special equipment for these worksheets?
Just the basics! You will need a pair of child-safe scissors, some glue sticks, and perhaps some coloured pencils if your children want to make their mini beasts look extra bright and colourful.
Q: Is this resource suitable for children who can't read yet?
Yes, it is! While there are some labels for categories, parents or teachers can read these aloud. The pictures make it very clear what each creature is, so children can still enjoy the sorting process.
Q: Can I use this for a whole class activity?
Absolutely. These worksheets are very easy to print off and hand out. They work well as a main activity during a Science lesson about living things and their habitats.
