About This Resource
Learning to write numbers is a huge milestone for little ones. It is the first step toward them feeling like "big" school children who can record their own ideas and solve problems. Our Number Formation Activities for KS1 and EYFS Children pack is designed to make this process simple, stress-free, and, most importantly, fun.
What is this resource?
This resource is a collection of hands-on sheets and tasks that help children learn how to write digits from 0 to 9 correctly. It focuses on helping children trace the numbers using clear guides. Each page gives plenty of space for children to move from following a dotted line to writing the numbers all on their own.
We know that every child learns at a different pace. That is why these number formation activities include different levels of support. Some pages have large numbers for beginners, while others offer smaller tracks for children who have better control of their pencils.

Who is it for?
We have created these activities specifically for children in their early years of school. This includes:
- EYFS: Nursery and Reception children who are just starting to notice that marks on paper have meaning.
- KS1: Year 1 and Year 2 children who might need a bit of extra practice to stop their numbers from being reversed or "backwards."
If you are looking for more ways to support your child's early learning, you might want to explore our full range of EYFS Activities or our KS1 Resources.
What will children learn?
Using these sheets helps children develop several important skills at once. First, they build "muscle memory." By following the correct paths to trace the numbers, their hands learn the flow of the movement. This is much better than just copying a shape, as it teaches them to start at the top and follow the right direction.
Secondly, these number formation activities improve fine motor skills. Holding a pencil and staying on a line takes a lot of concentration and strength in small hand muscles. Finally, it builds confidence. There is nothing quite like the smile on a child's face when they realise they have written a perfect "8" all by themselves!
Tips for using this resource
You can use these sheets in a few different ways to keep things interesting:
- Make it Reusable: Slide the printed sheets into a plastic polypocket or laminate them. Children can then use a dry-wipe pen to trace the numbers over and over again.
- Try a Sensory Start: Before using a pencil, ask your child to trace the number on the sheet using their finger. You could even put some salt or sand in a tray and have them "write" the number there first to get the hang of the shape.
For older children who are ready for a bigger challenge, you can find more advanced tasks in our Year 2 Maths Worksheets section.
Fitting into the Curriculum
These activities fit perfectly with the UK National Curriculum goals for Maths. In EYFS, it supports the "Number" Early Learning Goal, where children learn to count and recognise numerals. For KS1, it helps meet the requirements for "Number and Place Value," ensuring children can read and write numbers to at least 100.
We hope you and your little learners enjoy working through these pages together!

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My child keeps writing their numbers backwards. Will this help?
Yes, number reversal is very common in young children. These activities use arrows and tracing lines to show children exactly where to start and which way to turn, which helps fix those common mistakes.
Q: Do I need to print the whole pack at once?
Not at all! You can just print the specific number your child is working on that day, or print the 1-5 set if they are just starting out.
Q: Can these be used for morning starters in a classroom?
Absolutely. These sheets are perfect for "soft start" mornings or as a quiet activity for children to complete independently while you take the register.
