About About This Resource

If you are looking for a simple, stress-free way to help your little ones with their reading, you are in the right place.

A fun way to learn about animals

Our Animal Word Search is a bright and clear activity designed specifically for children aged 5 to 7. At this age, children are often in Year 1 or Year 2. They are starting to become much more confident with their letters, but they still need plenty of practice to help those skills stick.

This puzzle isn't too tricky. We know that if a word search is too crowded or the words are too long, children can get a bit frustrated. That’s why we’ve kept the grid simple and used familiar animal names. You’ll find words like 'cat', 'dog', and 'fish', alongside slightly more challenging ones like 'tiger' or 'rabbit'. It is a lovely way to spend ten or fifteen minutes during a rainy afternoon or as a quiet morning activity in the classroom.

Why word searches are great for Year 1 and Year 2

While it might look like just a game, this Animal Word Search is actually a fantastic learning tool. When a child looks for a word, they aren't just seeing a shape. They are scanning the grid for specific letters in a specific order. This is a brilliant way to help them settle into the habit of "left-to-right" reading.

It also helps with spelling. To find the word 'lion', they have to keep those four letters in their head and look for them one by one. This repetition helps them memorise how words are built. It’s a much more relaxed way to learn than a traditional spelling test! In the UK National Curriculum, Key Stage 1 children are expected to read and spell common words, and this resource fits right in with those early literacy goals.

How to use this resource at home or in class

You can simply print this out and hand it over with a pencil, but here are a couple of ideas to make it even more engaging:

  • Use Highlighters: Kids love using bright colours. Instead of just circling the words, let them use a different coloured highlighter for each animal they find. It makes the finished page look like a work of art!
  • Talk About the Animals: Once they find a word, ask them a quick question. "You found the giraffe! Where do giraffes live?" or "Can you make the sound a duck makes?" This turns a solo activity into a lovely conversation.

More ways to learn

If your child enjoys this activity, we have plenty of other KS1 Literacy Resources to explore. For those who are a little younger or just starting out with their phonics, you might also like to check out our Early Years Activities for more inspiration.

We hope your children have a wonderful time hunting for those hidden animals!
