Inspiring Number Tracing 0-9 Activities for Kids

We know that helping your child start their maths journey is an exciting time. Learning to write numbers for the first time is a big milestone. Our “Inspiring Number Tracing 0-9 Activities for Kids” pack is designed to make this process simple, clear, and stress-free for both you and your little ones.

What is this resource?

This resource is a collection of easy-to-use worksheets that focus on the very basics of writing. Each page is dedicated to a single digit, from zero all the way up to nine. We have used large, clear outlines and dashed lines to show children exactly how to move their pencils.

By using these sheets, children get plenty of practice with Number Tracing 0-9. We have kept the pages clean and tidy so that kids don’t feel overwhelmed by too many pictures or distracting colours. It is all about building confidence, one number at a time.

Who is it for?

These activities are perfect for children aged 3 to 5 who are just starting to show an interest in marks and symbols. If your child is in nursery or starting their Reception year, these sheets will be a great fit.

They are also brilliant for older children in Year 1 who might need a little bit of extra practice to get their numbers the right way round. If you are looking for more ways to support your child’s early development, you might also find our EYFS Activities section very helpful.

What will children learn?

When children use these tracing sheets, they are doing much more than just drawing lines. They are learning three very important things:

  1. Number Recognition: By seeing the shape of the number “4” or “7” over and over again, they begin to remember what it looks like and what its name is.
  2. Fine Motor Skills: Holding a pencil and following a specific path is hard work for small hands. This practice helps strengthen the muscles in their fingers and wrists.
  3. Correct Formation: It is easy for children to pick up habits like starting a “0” from the bottom. These sheets guide them to start and finish in the right place, which makes writing much faster and neater as they get older.

Practical tips for home or the classroom

You don’t just have to sit at a table with a lead pencil! Here are a couple of ways to make Number Tracing 0-9 even more engaging:

  • Make it reusable: Slip the printed sheets into a plastic dry-wipe folder or a clear polypocket. Give your child a whiteboard marker to trace the numbers. This way, they can rub out any mistakes and try again as many times as they like. It also saves on printing!
  • Try “Rainbow Writing”: Instead of using just one colour, let your child trace over the same number with five or six different coloured crayons. By the end, they will have a beautiful, bright rainbow number, and they will have practised the movement multiple times without even realising it.

Supporting the UK National Curriculum

In the UK, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework encourages children to recognise and write numbers as part of their early learning goals. These worksheets are a lovely way to meet those goals in a relaxed way. They also help prepare children for the Year 1 curriculum, where they are expected to read and write numbers to 20 in numerals.

We hope you and your children enjoy using these sheets together. Happy tracing!
