About About This Resource

Get Spooky with Our Halloween Word Scramble

Halloween is such an exciting time for children. Between the costumes, the decorations, and the treats, there is a lot of energy in the air! At Study Pillars, we want to help you turn that excitement into a fun learning opportunity. Our Halloween word scramble is a simple, no-prep activity that gets kids thinking about spelling while they enjoy the spooky season.

What is this resource?

This activity is a collection of jumbled-up words all related to Halloween. You will find words like "ghost", "pumpkin", and "witch", but the letters are all mixed up. The goal is for children to look at the letters and rearrange them to spell the correct word.

It is a great way to keep kids busy on a rainy October afternoon or to start a literacy lesson with a bit of a giggle. Because it is simple to follow, children can often get started on it right away without needing too much help.

Who is it for?

We have designed these activities for children aged between 3 and 11. For younger children in EYFS Activities, you might want to sit with them and help them sound out the letters. Older children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 will enjoy the challenge of solving the puzzles on their own.

It is a versatile resource that works just as well on a kitchen table at home as it does on a desk in a busy classroom. Whether you are a parent looking for a "quiet time" task or a teacher needing a quick morning starter, this Halloween word scramble fits perfectly.

What will children learn?

While it looks like just a bit of fun, word scrambles are actually brilliant for building literacy skills. Here are a few things children will practise:

  • Spelling: They have to think about which letters go together to form a word they recognise.
  • Problem-solving: It takes a bit of logic to figure out where a "p" or a "k" might fit in a word.
  • Phonics: For younger kids, it is a great chance to practise the sounds that letters make.
  • Vocabulary: They might come across new seasonal words they haven't seen written down before.

In the UK National Curriculum, spelling and word recognition are huge parts of the Primary Literacy Resources framework. This activity helps children become more familiar with common letter patterns in a way that doesn't feel like "work."

How to use this at home or in class

There are plenty of ways to make this activity even more engaging. Here are two of our favourite tips:

  1. Make it a Race: If you have a group of children, give them each a sheet and see who can solve the Halloween word scramble the fastest. You could even offer a small "trick or treat" prize for the winner.
  2. Laminate for Later: If you want to use the resource again next year, try laminating the sheets. Children can use dry-wipe markers to write their answers and then wipe them clean for the next person. This is a great tip for teachers who want to use them as part of a KS1 English rotation station.

We hope your little ones enjoy solving these puzzles as much as we enjoyed making them!

Have a wonderful time getting ready for your Halloween celebrations!
