About This Resource
As the weather turns chilly and we start reaching for our big coats and woolly hats, it is the perfect time to bring some seasonal fun into the classroom or your living room. Our latest Winter Clothes Cutting Skills Activity for Kids is a simple, hands-on way to keep little ones busy while they learn.
What is this activity?
This resource is a set of printable sheets featuring all our favourite winter items. You will find warm bobble hats, cosy mittens, long scarves, and sturdy boots. Each picture has clear dotted lines for children to follow with their scissors.
We designed this Winter clothes cutting activity to be easy to print and use straight away. There is no complicated setup required. Just grab some child-safe scissors and a glue stick, and you are ready to go.

Who is it for?
This activity is ideal for children aged between 3 and 6. It is a fantastic addition to your Early Years Resources if you are working with nursery or reception-aged children.
It is also great for older children in Year 1 who might need a little bit of extra practice to get confident with their scissor control. Whether you are a teacher looking for a quiet morning task or a parent needing a rainy-day activity, this resource fits perfectly.
What will children learn?
Using scissors might seem simple to us, but for a young child, it is quite a workout! When children take part in this Winter clothes cutting activity, they are practicing several important skills:
- Hand strength: Squeezing scissors helps to build the small muscles in the hands. These are the same muscles they will use later for holding a pencil and writing.
- Hand-eye coordination: Following the dotted lines around a scarf or a hat requires the brain and hands to work together closely.
- Bilateral coordination: This is a fancy way of saying "using both hands at once." One hand holds and turns the paper while the other hand does the cutting.
- Focus and patience: Staying on the lines takes a bit of concentration, which is great for helping children learn to settle into a task.
In the UK, this fits neatly into the "Physical Development" area of the EYFS framework, where children work on their fine motor skills.
Tips for using this at home or in school
To get the most out of these sheets, here are a couple of ideas:
- Create a Winter Wardrobe: Once the children have cut out the items, why not let them colour them in? You can then stick them onto a large piece of blue card to create a "Winter Wardrobe" display. It is a lovely way to show off their hard work.
- Make a "Dress the Bear" game: If you have a teddy bear in the classroom, children can cut out the clothes and "dress" the bear (or a drawing of a bear) for a snowy day.
If you are looking for more ways to keep your little ones busy during the colder months, do check out our other Winter Activities. We also have plenty of KS1 Resources for when they are ready for the next challenge.
We hope you and your children have a wonderful time getting creative with these winter shapes!
